For many people, it is not easy to decide to consult a psychotherapist. In our public consciousness, there are still attitudes that this is an “indicator of weakness of character” or “recognition of insanity.”
Who may need psychotherapy or consultation with a psychotherapist?
People who suffer from anxiety, panic attacks, depression, various phobias or fears usually come for a consultation with a psychotherapist. Also, the services of a psychotherapist will be needed for people suffering from psychosomatic disorders (irritable bowel syndrome, headaches, nausea and vomiting on a nervous basis, etc.). In our clinic, psychotherapists work in tandem with a psychiatrist to be able to supplement the course of psychotherapy with medications, if necessary.
With the beginning of the war in Ukraine, the list of requests for a psychotherapist has expanded. Added: post-traumatic stress disorder in adults and children; loss of home, forced migration, loss of loved ones, fear of the future.
How to prepare for a consultation with a psychotherapist?
You need to consult with doctors of related specialties if you are concerned about any physiological symptoms. For example, you may need to consult a cardiologist if you notice interruptions in the work of the heart against the background of stress. Or consultation with an endocrinologist if there are suspicions of hormonal disorders. If you already have a doctor’s report, it will help if you take them with you.
Before visiting a psychotherapist, you need to try to formulate what exactly is bothering you? How long have you had such problems? What have you already tried to do? What helps you and what doesn’t? If it’s hard to articulate, don’t worry, it’s not critical. At the first consultation, our specialist will definitely help you with this.
How is the consultation with a psychotherapist going?
Like any other consultation: our specialist will help you navigate what worries you, offer options for working with this issue, coordinate further actions and tactics with you.
